2026 NCAA Beach Volleyball Transfer Portal Opens — and the Reshuffling Has Begun

The confetti has barely settled in Westwood, but the rest of college beach volleyball isn’t waiting around. With UCLA celebrating its national championship, the 2026 NCAA Transfer Portal opened on May 3rd — and early signs point to a busy month ahead before the window closes on June 1st.

Early Confirmed Moves

A handful of transfers have already been announced. San Diego (USD) looks to be one of the early winners of the portal season, landing a notable haul: Kierstyn Barton (Washington → USD), Gala Trubint (USC → USD), Madison Pietsch (USC → USD), and Maddie White (Texas → USD). Meanwhile, Liv Johnson has made the move from LMU to Tulane.

All Eyes on LSU and Cal Poly

The biggest buzz in the early days of the portal centers on two programs: LSU and Cal Poly, with rumors circulating of four to five players entering from each school.

Cal Poly’s numbers are less surprising in context. The Mustangs carried a massive 28-player roster last season — heavy on freshmen and juniors — and are graduating five seniors, so some natural attrition was expected. The program itself remains well-regarded, and its next two recruiting classes are reportedly strong.

LSU is a different story. The Tigers boast arguably the most well-funded beach program in the country — fully funded scholarships for all 19 players, robust NIL support, and top-tier facilities. And yet, the portal activity raises eyebrows. Forum insiders point to a few possible explanations: Baton Rouge’s limited college-town appeal, an increased team emphasis on faith-based activities that may not suit every player’s preferences, and the program’s notable absence from this year’s Gulf Shores national championship — a big miss for a program with LSU’s resources.

The Stacked-Roster Problem

Another trend driving portal activity: players at powerhouse programs realizing their path to court time may be limited. UCLA is expected to return nine of ten starters next season; Stanford is in a similar position. For players sitting behind elite pairs at those schools, the portal offers a chance to find a home where they can compete for starting spots immediately.

What’s Next

Coaches were already fielding calls during Gulf Shores, with campus visits, academic alignment discussions, and NIL negotiations reportedly underway. The portal window runs through June 1st — expect the next few weeks to bring a steady stream of announcements as rosters take shape for the 2027 season.
