Sand Storm: The Beach Volleyball Portal Is Open and Rosters Are Moving
The NCAA beach volleyball transfer portal opened just eight days ago, and it’s already delivering. The window runs from May 3 through June 1, and coaches wasted zero time. Here’s what we know right now.
USD Is the Surprise Winner of the Early Portal Rush
San Diego is quietly putting together one of the most interesting hauls of this cycle. Four confirmed additions in the first week: Kierstyn Barton from Washington, Gala Trubint and Madison Pietsch making the jump from USC’s indoor program to the beach, and Maddie White out of Texas. Two indoor-to-beach converts in one class is a statement. USD is coming for somebody’s spot in the rankings conversation next spring.
The LSU Situation Is… A Lot
Four to five players are rumored to be entering the portal from LSU, and the volleyball community cannot stop talking about it. On paper, this makes zero sense. LSU has one of the most well-resourced beach programs in the country: fully funded scholarships for all 19 players, serious NIL money, and elite facilities. And yet.
The community has theories: Baton Rouge isn’t an easy sell for West Coast recruits, and perhaps most damaging, LSU missed Gulf Shores this year entirely. When you have that kind of money and those resources, not making the national championship stings. Players notice. Parents notice. Recruits notice.
ASU Gets a Boost from the Indoor Side
Sisi McDermott, outside hitter, is reportedly headed to Arizona State’s beach program. Indoor-to-beach transfers are always fascinating storylines, and ASU, which finished 13-8 this past season, is clearly building toward something. This is the kind of move that raises a program’s ceiling.
The Elephant in the Room: Court Time
Here’s the macro story driving a lot of this portal activity. UCLA is expected to return nine of its ten starters for next season. Stanford? Same. USC is similarly stacked. For players sitting behind elite pairs at those powerhouses, the math is simple: the portal gives you a chance to actually compete. Programs like USD, Tulane, and ASU are benefiting directly from that calculus, picking up players who would be buried on a top-5 roster elsewhere.
The Money Gap Is Getting Real
Not all beach programs are created equal right now. LSU, Texas, and South Carolina are among the fully-funded programs, every scholarship covered, NIL stacked on top. The University of Texas has committed to fully funding all athletes in all varsity sports, a jaw-dropping commitment that is actively reshaping recruiting.
Three Weeks Left
The window closes June 1st. Coaches were already deep in calls during Gulf Shores weekend, and campus visits are happening now. The next wave of announcements is coming. Who’s going to be the next program to quietly stockpile talent while everyone else is watching? Who’s going to blow up a roster we thought was set?
We’re watching. The kettle is very much on. ☕
